One of the questions I hear most often before a family session is, “What should we wear?”
My biggest piece of advice? Choose outfits that feel like you. Your photos should feel natural and timeless, not like everyone showed up in the exact same outfit.
A few simple choices can make a big difference while still leaving plenty of room for everyone's personality to shine.
Start with a color palette
Instead of choosing one color for everyone, think about colors that work well together. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted blues, warm browns, creams, and subtle patterns tend to photograph beautifully. Think coordinating, not matching. If one person has a patterned dress or shirt they love, use that as a starting point and pull a few complementary colors from it for everyone else.
Consider the location and season
Your location can help guide your wardrobe. For an outdoor session around Raleigh, think about how your outfits will work with the surroundings. Light, neutral tones can look beautiful against greenery, while warmer colors can complement fall landscapes.
You'll also want to dress for the weather. Raleigh summers can be hot, and fall evenings can get chilly, so don't sacrifice everyone's comfort just for the sake of an outfit.
Add texture and layers
Texture can add a lot of visual interest to photographs without making an outfit feel busy. Think linen, knits, denim, corduroy, or soft layers. For cooler sessions, a sweater, cardigan, jacket, or simple blanket can also give us something to work with throughout the session and create a little variety in your gallery.
Most importantly, be yourselves.
There are no rules saying everyone has to wear beige linen and look at the camera with a perfect smile. Some of my favorite photographs happen when families are simply being together—running, laughing, snuggling, dancing, or doing whatever comes naturally.
Your outfits are just one small part of your photographs. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable enough to forget about the camera and enjoy your people.
If you're planning a family session in the Raleigh area and want help choosing outfits, I'm always happy to help. I can offer guidance before your session so you feel confident walking through the door (or into the field!) on picture day.
